It is expected

The crew have anticipated this day for some time, ever since they were conscripted and imprisoned. A sailing date has been announced and there will only be two weeks left on dry land, a fearsome prospect. Today, they will be let outside so that they will again be able to open their eyes in daylight. Keeping them underground meant that they would not have a chance to take their leave, but left many badly ill and blind, making it necessary to eliminate them as kindly as possible by sword rather than fire. All were tattooed with the sign of the Angel of Souls and knew at once their eventual fate.
